The annual  PEACEMAKING  LUNCHEON  is  SUN. OCT 2!    It’s our “TATER  TOPPER”,  with a giant baked potato with MANY delicious toppings of your choice; a salad; dessert bars; & beverage, all for just $7.00 for adults, $3.00 for kids under 12.  Tickets are at the door.


FALL FEST is Sat., October 22, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM !  PLEASE BRING YOUR ITEMS FOR OUR GIANT RUMMAGE SALE to Jack Reichert Hall RIGHT NOW!!!  Your bags, boxes, etc. can be lined up along the west wall.  (The items covered in blue plastic are ALREADY MARKED, so please put your things where it’s clear that they AREN’T marked.)  And, DO go through your closets & sort out GENTLY USED CLEAN CLOTHING  you no longer need, for Easter Seals will once again pick up our “leftovers” at the conclusion of the day – & pay us for them!!!  Remember:  WE CAN NOT ACCEPT THE  FOLLOWING!  TV SETS, COMPUTERS & MONITORS, BEDS OR HIDE-A-BEDS, & CHILDREN’S CAR SEATS.  Please help with marking prices: check with Barb Brunett to find out when folks will be here marking.

            I’ve been thinking again about one of those deep, deep theological principles…  It goes by many names, but the one I think I like best is…

Clearing the Clutter.

            You know, Fall Fest is just around the corner; it will, in fact, be here before we know it.  Fall Fest is one of our biggest events of the year…

            Not only does it give us the opportunity to have a ton of fun celebrating the season, it also gives us a chance to minimize our stuff…

            It has long been recognized how healthy it is to get organized!  Ironically, as our closets, basements and attics become clearer, so do our hearts, minds and spirits!  Without the weight of all that stuff, we’re better able to see and feel that which is most important, most vital to a happy life.

            One of my favorite theologians,

Dr. James Buffet, wrote a song called “One Particular Harbor”.  In it, he recognizes:  “Times are rough, and I’ve got too much stuff, can’t explain the likes of me.”

            I invite you to join me in combing the nooks and crannies of our spaces, finding those things of value that no longer serve a helpful purpose, and donating them to our beloved church for the Fall Fest Rummage Sale.

            Your spirit will thank you, The Spirit will thank you, and our Angels will thank you.  It’s a win, win, win situation!

Get your FLU SHOTS here on October 16TH !!! Walgreen’s is bringing their FLU  SHOT  CLINIC  right here to Greenfield Avenue Presbyterian Church, beginning at 10:30 AM (or as soon as the service is over).  All you need to do is come to the church library (do bring your insurance card; it will cover the cost of your shot) … & get in line.  For those on Medicare Part D, Walgreen’s will also have free pneumovax shots available.  For those who do not have insurance, Walgreen’s has a voucher program that allows some folks to get the shots free.                               Not only do these Flu Clinics keep YOU healthy, by making sure you’re protected against the flu to the fullest extent possible – when you get your shot here, you’re taking part in their “Get a Shot, Give a Shot” program, which donates a shot to a child in a developing country, for each flu shot given.  It’s a win-win-win situation!  DO plan to get your shot that morning; it will be helpful if you sign up in advance, on Oct. 2 or Oct. 9.  That way we can give Walgreens an idea of how much vaccine, to bring along.   Many thanks to Walgreens, for providing this service for us! 


SPECIAL THANKS to Rev. Dr. Craig Howard, Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Presbytery of Milwaukee, for being with us on Sept. 25.  The information he provided, with commentary & an extraordinary video, on  racism in the U.S. – both many years ago, & today – was eye-opening & valuable. 


Sunday School on Oct. 9 - We’ll have a visit from Tim Kabara & Reina Takamura, from MapleGrove Treatment Center.  They’ll speak with us about autism, & the work they do here at the church with autistic young people, on weekdays.  Autism is such a puzzling condition, widely misunderstood, so it’s a vitally important topic. 


C.O.P.S. at Sunday School Sun., Oct. 30  -  Denise Held, from Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) will be our guest to speak with us on this morning. Mark Brodaczynski is involved with the organization, & has kindly arranged for Denise to tell us about their work. 

“Each year, between 140 & 160 officers are killed in the line of duty & their families & co-workers are left to cope with the tragic loss. C.O.P.S. provides resources to help them rebuild their shattered lives.”  The group was organized in 1984, “with 110 individual members; today their membership includes more than 37,000 survivors (i.e. spouses, children, parents, siblings, significant others, & affected co-workers of officers killed in the line of duty.”  This is a program you won’t want to miss!  It’s also a good time to invite friends & neighbors to join us.



We participated in the “Undie 500” for the Guest House.  We collected 48 pairs of socks; 52 pairs of underwear, & 21 T-shirts.  The Peace & Justice Committee sends thanks to everyone who donated to the “Undie 500”. 

On another note, on Sept. 15, the Guest House celebrated the completion of their newly renovated & expanded facility, which will enable them to maximize their efforts of providing services & programming within the community.  Check out their website: 


What a sweet note we received from Kate Sponholz, who’s been such a help to us on some of the Sundays when Music Minister Sheri Masiakowski took some time off.  Kate writes:

SPINNING YARNS Knitting Ministry WILL meet as usual, on October 15.  However, in addition to (or instead of) knitting, they MAY busy themselves MARKING ITEMS for the GIANT FALL FEST RUMMAGE  SALE.  Want to help out?  Be here that morning, at 9:00.


We recently received the following note:

“Dear Members of the Presbyterian Church,    Thank you so much for the backpacks & school supplies.  It was very generous of you.  We really appreciate it, & our students appreciate it even more.  It is greatly needed.   Thanks again!    The Wilson (School) Staff”


Don’t forget to help us as we continue our support of WILSON SCHOOL! We’ve begun our 4th year helping provide  donations of back packs & school supplies; we’ve already  delivered a generous amount to the school.  BUT – we need to do even MORE!  This WAWM elementary school, (like so many others in the area) has a significant number of students whose parents, through no fault of their own, cannot afford the necessary school supplies.  Teachers & administrators often dig deep into their own pockets to provide for these children, whom they care about so deeply.   We applaud them, and we want to offer as much assistance as we’re able, also.  There’s a LIST of needed items taped to the collection box in the narthex; please jot down a few of the items, watch for sales, & pick up some to bring to church. Helping to get kids off to the best possible educational start is one of the most loving acts that we, as Christians, can perform, & we’re thankful to have the opportunity to help.  Let’s see how much we can collect, before the next box (or boxes) filled with supplies are ready to be delivered.  THANKS!

We support GOOD SAMARITAN OUTREACH CENTER’S FOOD  PANTRY, & each month, we suggest a CHALLENGE  ITEM  for you to donate,  as generously as possible.  Monthly challenge suggestions are below – but remember, you may donate ANY non-perishable food items at ANY time!  Thank you, GAPC family!

November --- Holiday items   (cranberries, sweet potatoes, canned gravy, etc.)

December --- Baking items (flour, sugar, brown sugar, etc.)

On Sept. 1, they wrote the following to us:   “Dear Friends:   Thank you so much for your food donation.  Rest assured we will make sure that these goods are received by needy members of our community.  Your contribution of food is more significant because it enables Good Sam’s to provide greater variation in the food that we distribute.  We tend to provide our community members with a somewhat routine menu of food, & we are delighted to be able to surprise them with different foods.  Thank you so much for thinking of us. Annie B.

Singer/Songwriter ANNIE  B will be our guest here at GAPC at a special fun & fund-raiser concert on Sunday, November 27, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in Jack Reichert Hall, on our newly renovated stage.  Tickets are a MUST … & are a real bargain at just $10.00; we’ll have them available for purchase, very soon.   In addition to Annie’s wonderful music, we’ll have “schnibbles” to munch on, with wine or beer available for an additional charge.   Annie stands out among over 1,000 female singers in Wisconsin, as she was nominated Female Vocalist for a WAMI Award, & Shepherd Express Female Vocalist Award (among others).  We’re thrilled that this very talented as we conclude the celebration of GAPC’s 90th Anniversary year.


Did you happen to see the Wall Street Journal issue of Aug. 27/28?  It listed SA Braai  (Wendi & Matthew Devan’s companyMild Chutney as # 2 among “Complimentary Condiments” in the papers “Eating & Drinking” section.  Wendi’s family (the Webers & Stocks) are so happy about the accolades

C.R.O.P.  Walk will take place on Sun., Oct. 9, beginning at 2:00 PM at McKinley

Marina.  You’ll want to be there early, to register -- & as always, you’re asked to bring some non-perishable food to donate.  Even if you’re not a “walker”, please bring some non-perishable foodstuff to worship with you that morning; we’ll see that it goes to help feed the hungry.


Looking for a great VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY???  Good Samaritan’s Food Pantry is in serious need of regular & substitute workers to register food recipients, to pack groceries, & to sort clothing.  Volunteers can work one day per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday), from 9:45 AM – 2:00 PM.  Please contact Good Samaritan at 414-541-7668, & ask
