               WHY YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

  • 1 in 6 Americans face hunger every day.
  • 12.9 million children and 5.4 million seniors in the U.S. are food insecure.
  • 40.6 million Americans live in poverty.
  • Volunteers make a tangible difference and put food on the table for thousands of hungry individuals.

SUNDAY SCHOOL FEB 4 & 11 - Kristina & Mark will present a discussion on THE OPIOID CRISIS & ADDICTION following worship on Feb. 4.  Use of heroin and other dangerous, addictive substances are rampant across the country, & deaths from overdose have become increasingly common.  It’s a subject we ALL need to be informed about!   And on Feb. 11, we’ll have some additional information.  INVITE OTHERS TO JOIN US FOR THESE DATES!

MARDI  GRAS (Feb. 13 worship) is our meaningful pre-Lenten service.  It’s at 6:30 PM, & Pastor Kevin’s letter below will tell you all about it! BRING  (sort of calorie laden??) treats to share!

Happy February, Beloved!

There are a couple of dates coming up that I really want to bring to your attention!

The first is Tuesday, February 13th.  That evening, (6:30), we will hold our second annual “Mardi Gras” service!  You know that it means ‘Fat Tuesday” in French, and as the day before Lent begins, it gives us a chance to say goodbye, at least temporarily, to those things that tempt us, (like fat and sugar!)

In accordance with that idea, I propose that, following the service, we have a pot-luck party and share a whole host of our favorite treats – sweet, savory, and fluid…  Then we’ll be more than ready to embrace the Lenten Season with open hearts and minds, and full bellies…

We’re thinking about something special for Palm/Passion Sunday. (March 25th)  We’re thinking maybe a skit for the Sermon/Holy Conversation time.  If you might be inspired to take part in creating and presenting such a skit, please let me know!

Then, on Pentecost Sunday, May 20th, we have a unique opportunity!  Our beloved Music Minister Sheri, will be away, and because it’s a high holiday, we’re having trouble finding a stand-in.  So, here’s my idea: if many of us would volunteer to lead a favorite hymn/song or two, we could fill the bulletin and the air with wonderful, beautiful music.  Would you help us out that day, or do you know someone who could?  We’d love that.  Let me know!

Finally, let us not forget Sunday morning!  With illnesses, bitter cold, ice and busy schedules, we sometimes get a little lonely here!  Please make every effort to be with us on Sundays, and invite your friends and loved ones to join us.  Thank You!

God loves you.  Me too!        -   Pastor   Kevin

SOUP & SANDWICH AFTER  CHURCH CAFÉ  is on Sunday, February 25, right after our church service.  The meal consists of delicious HOME-MADE  SOUPS (you get to choose from several kinds); sandwiches;  cookies or bars, & coffee, tea or milk.  Tickets are SOOOO reasonably priced!  Just $7.00 for adults, & $3.00 for kids under age 12.

DURING LENT, we participate in ONE  GREAT  HOUR  of  SHARING,  a Christian effort to empower, provide water, supply food, & give relief from disasters.  Currently, OGHS has projects to provide clean drinking water in more than 20 countries, as well as hunger relief.  It’s a long-term commitment to disaster relief, and also helps men & women supply the needs of their families in a variety of ways.  We hope you’ll  USE THE ENVELOPE which is provided for OGHS  IN YOUR REGULAR OFFERING ENVELOPES.  Please note that we won’t be providing pew envelopes for any special offerings in the future

The Jan. 28 ANNUAL MEETING went off very smoothly, immediately following the service.  The Annual Report was approved with several minor corrections.  The quorum present elected Janice  to the Board of Deacons in the “Class of 2020”.  Phyllis indicated that she’s willing to serve another 2-year term on the audit committee; and Nominating Committee Members for this year are Judy,  Diane E, Dan and Kristina.   MANY, MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL!

ON PALM SUNDAY morning, we’re hoping to present a  SKIT  to  celebrate this significant day in our church year.   Would YOU be interested in taking part??  We’re asking all who’d like to be actors & actresses to TELL  PASTOR  KEVIN  as soon as possible.  We don’t quite “have all the ducks in a row” yet, but it’s important that we find out who is willing to accept roles.  It will be fun … DO volunteer. Palm Sunday is March 25; it will be here before you know it.

OUR CHURCH TREASURER gave us the happy news that we EXCEEDED our goal for Scrip in 2017!   The goal was $1,200.00, & our sales totaled $1,267.05.  That’s great!  Now let’s see if we can exceed THAT amount, in 2018!

Habitat for Humanity and the Christ Church Christmas Toy Store sent lovely letters of thanks for our donations to them.  We sent $395 to Habitat, thanks to the “Habitat Christmas Tree” made at the tree in the narthex; and the Toy Store wrote the following:  “With the generous support of people like you, we were able to provide reading books, coloring books, seasonal wraps, and toys to over 400 children ages 12 & under in the Milwaukee community, to make their Christmas special.  It is a blessing to know that your contributions made the holiday season so special for so many.  The joyful faces & humble comments of the participating children & families was enough to warm our hearts, fill our spirits, & spur our efforts for the upcoming year.  Thank you again.”

We’re SO GLAD to be able to help these worthy organizations in this way.  GAPC folks, Thank You!

FUTURE EVENTS  TO  WATCH  FOR:

THE FOLLOWING ARTICLES appear in MOST of our Messengers, sometimes identical from one month to the next, & sometimes with small changes (such as the monthly suggestion for the Good Samaritan food pantry.)

Are you wondering WHY we continue to include them?  They’re here just as a REMINDER, that we need YOUR HELP as we support these ministries.

REMEMBER to order  SCRIP each month, on the 2nd Sunday.  The  GIFT  CARDS you’ll receive return a percentage of purchase to GAPC !  Why isSCRIP  so wonderful?  Its  because you can use it for things you ordinarily buy anyway; & because it makes the PERFECT  GIFT for birthdays, anniversaries, “just because” gifts, & more.  Who can’t use a GAS CARD, or a GROCERY CARD, or one of the MANY others you can purchase???

We HOPE our newsletter & announcements on Sunday morning will inspire you to PURCHASE as much SCRIP as possible whenever we offer it!!  It’s such a PAINLESS way to help our church!  Here are just a few possibilities:  PICK ’N SAVE,  SAM’S CLUB, WAL-MART, MENARD’S, SPEEDWAY,  & KOHL’S)  There are MANY, MANY more, so many that we just DON’T have room to list them all.  Please do look over the Scrip pages in the narthex, so you can decide well in advance which ones you want to order.    Then, when you need a gift card for any special occasion -- a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding or baby gift, a graduation gift – or simply a gas card for yourself – place your order with Church Treasurer JT Gall  & your gift cards will be here the next week!   It’s one of the best ways you can help out the church budget AND have cards to use for things you’d buy anyway!

THE  GUEST  HOUSE reminds us that even though the HOLIDAYS ARE OVER, this wonderful organization, which helps men in transition, both “in shelter” & in permanent housing, still has serious needs, now that winter has arrived with a vengeance.  We’ve been helping The Guest House for many years, & plan to continue helping with their ministry. Especially needed at present are:

·         New winter gloves,

·         New men’s jeans (34x32, 36 x 32, & 38 x 32)

·         New men’s T-shirts sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3 XL

·         New men’s boxers sizes S, M, 2X & 3 X

·         New men’s deodorant

Don’t forget to help us as we continue to support WILSON SCHOOL!  We’ve started our 5th  year helping this WAWM elementary school by making donations of back packs & school supplies.  This school, (like so many others in the area) has a significant number of students whose parents, through no fault of their own, cannot afford the necessary school supplies.  Teachers & administrators often dig deep into their own pockets to provide for these children, whom they care about so deeply.   This this is a year-long, ongoing mission for us, so once school is actually in session, we don’t stop bringing supplies … we keep providing them!

INTERFAITH  WEST  CENTRAL  urgently needs VOLUNTEER DRIVERS .  The DRIVERS bring Interfaith clients to needed appointments: doctor, hairdresser, dentist, etc.  Even if you’re able to drive only once in a while, your help will be valued.  If you’re able to take clients with walkers, please let Interfaith know.   Call Tammy Hero, Director of West Central Neighborhood Outreach Older Adult Programs, 414-774-1747.

LAST CALL:  Mark & friends from his “HOCKEY FAMILY” ask you to pass on this invitation:  The Youth Hockey Helpers Foundation, (a non-profit organization) will host its annual

to raise funds to supply hockey equipment to less fortunate youth hockey players.  It’s on February 17, 2018, & they’re seeking donations of items to be used for a raffle or silent auction, from interested community members. In the past, the Foundation has provided 3 scholarships in the amount of $2250.00 & hosted 4 free hockey camps at 2 local area ice rinks for kids from SE Wisconsin.  Any donations will

be appreciated, & can be mailed to:             Youth Hockey Helpers Foundation

An important announcement from Colleen Struck, Community Outreach Coordinator of the Aurora West Allis Medical Center Education Department, which may be beneficial to you or to someone you know, is as follows.

‘HEALING After the Loss of a Loved One Due to Addiction” is the title of a FREE support group offered there.  It’s for survivors of the passing of a loved one due to addiction or drug related deaths.  This group provides a supportive environment that fosters healing, hope, & recovery with consideration of the unique circumstances of a death related to substance use.  For mature adolescents & adults only, the program meets the 1st & 3rd Thursday of every month, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Aurora West Allis Medical Center, 8901 W.
